Weekly Update #3

Well, I'm 3 hours late, so what! I totally have a good reason for it:

I was trying to finish making my Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue (HTF) System become reality with colored bars in Inform! Still working on it as we speak, but I got most of it done! Here's a list of everything I've done in the past week:

  • I used ShadowChaser's Basic Characters as a basis, since I'm uber new to writing in inform (or anything for that matter other than C++), made some modifications, and deleted everything else I don't need.
  • I've wrote down some notes for later (as in, when I get a Random Dungeon) on how to possibly make a 'Willingness To Escape' (WITE will be the WIP Acronym for now) stat that will never be seen, but will pop up in messages such as
"As you experience more of the wonders here, you conclude they you don't need to leave right this instance."
  • Still deciding how I want the UI to display, and where to display it. My ideas so far:
The Map (Similar to  Aika's Trap Quest) will display in the upper right.
The HTF will display at the top horizontally.
Your statistical information will show on the left such as AMP, Race, and (Custom?) Class.
Current description of your appearance will appear on the Right, under the Map
  • Make the Map! See a small copy of it below (Not big so you don't know how to get through the Maze :P )

Now, for the things that I've been thinking about....

A while ago, the 5th post out of the current 50+ on the Forum Where All of the Background Stuff Is Being Discussed, I posted the below. Since that was MONTHS ago, I figured I'd post up some updates on it, since I'm already getting ahead of myself with the WITE system.

Here's the original post:
...mind you this will more than likely not be the final result...

Every 100 'turns' causes your will to escape to 'degrade' by a level. You have 10 levels. So, after 1,000 turns, you've lost the will to escape and will trigger the "Ok, I don't want to leave, but I haven't lost yet?" bad ending. You will continue to play, your goals your own now (like in any CYOA game.) but after sitting in one 'form' or TF path too long, you might trigger THAT bad ending for that race, or whatever you happen to look/act like.

...say you're a plant woman (and these effects are not set in stone). Using the 'total' along your path to full plant woman [Plant Woman being a race among Alteratio that is actually resistant to the magical forces at work], this will INCREASE how long it takes to degrade a 'Will to Escape' level.
-Ex. I am 12 points in, so it increases from 100 turns per degrade to 220 turns per downgrade.
Some might even increase (or decrease) your levels, or decrease the amount of turns (Magic Vulnerable races).
Even Magic Resistance would aid, and increase how long you can last.

I hate when games 'cut me off' when I just start getting into the groove of things. I'm also a slow TF kind of guy (and that takes time). Then I have a lot of areas to explore, lots of money to gather, levels, quests, Boss Fights(?)... I plan on making the game LONG per play through. I want it to be a game where you can attempt to be immersed in your character (And I encourage putting your own name down when you make your Character, because at least for me, it adds that extra hesitation of 'Would I REALLY do this?') and suffer the consequences of THEIR decisions, not your own. Will things impede/aid you in your escape? Definitely. You made the choice to STAY a plant woman, and you suffer both the benefits, and dis-benefits.

Though this was a hard decision to make even with what I stated above . . . "I HATE WHEN GAMES CUT ME OFF" . . . I feel there needs to be a threat that the player can't quell. That's what is making this game a bit different than the norm. Something that, no matter how much you fight or try to delay it, will still constantly loom as a reminder that your CHARACTER has a life outside the dungeon (With all of these riches that you are getting, enough to make a King and Dragon combined to look like peasants). That your character is a living, breathing person who is trying to get out alive, and not just your personal TF doll. That's why the threat is there.
-So, no indefinitely stopping the timer, buy OH-BOY can you delay it.
I still enjoy the idea that I had with the above, but I'll definitely be modifying it. You'll have your WITE, a stat that starts at maximum the moment you enter Alteratio. Now, whether I make it X amount of turns or X amount of things that happen to you is still up for debate (Maybe a possible poll in the future?), but there will be a point where you won't want to escape, and you can stay in Alteratio forever!

Again, the GOAL OF THE GAME is to escape with as much riches as you can. Your character knows that 'untold riches' lie in Alteratio but few have escaped, and if they escape they are changed. I'll make a few backgrounds that will be something like 'I just want to get away from this world and live in another' so you can purposefully stay there IC, but for the most part I'll be tailoring for the audience that gets in character, and more than likely their character will want to escape.

Bottom: Arriving at Castle Rahkuin.   Center: The Great Hall.   Left: Library.   Upper-Left: Alchemist Room
Right: Training Room      Upper-Middle: Last Minute Buys         Top: The Maze
This is not the final map, just a temporary map until I either draw it or get someone to draw it!

Otherwise, made more spell checking of what I got wrote down, expanded a little on some areas to make it more 'smooth', and am still figuring out how the hell to make a game in inform! Getting the gist if it though, so I I'm expecting mid Feb. at the latest I should have this done. N o promises, just my thoughts.
