New Poll(s) and Poll Results #1

<----- TWO of the most important polls for Alteratio that will ever exist are RIGHT THERE! VOTE, DANG YOU!

Okay, so let's talk about some results and what they mean for the Future of Alteratio, and I'll also discuss the Self-Explanatory Polls here - nothing will be updated in Voting Information.

New Poll #1:

Do you prefer slow, large updates or quick, small updates?
Again, this is self explanatory, but I really need to know this - I know some people will prefer one over the other. I felt it a necessary evil to ask this, because I want to know what you all expect of this game. What you expect of me. So far, it has been really neck and neck the entire time its been up.
You're all equally divided as I am on what to do!

It'll be closing Monday at Noon MST.

New Poll #2:
How do you want to play Alteratio?
Yup, very self explanatory, but I've been getting a lot of people stating this several over and over:

"I don't mind typing games, but I feel that I always have to search for things to do, and am unsure on what to type at some periods of play."

I've stated several times that I will be putting a 'verb dictionary' of all of the actions you've discovered in an easy to spot place while you play, so you can figure out what you can and cannot do.

I /think/ I can make it all button clicking, but it will take considerably more work (which I don't mind!) and I don't know if I will be able to make things 'secret' as well. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

I do know that the more buttons I make, the more I have to map every single unique thing you can do out - which is both good and bad :)

This is to see interest, and I may/may not do another poll in the future. We'll see.

Go on, you know you want to...
Ha! I knew it! :3

Anyway, for the other three polls...

1) What did you want in the game first?
WOW! I'm super surprised that Character Creation won. Transformation was winning for a bit, but fell off after a while.

This doesn't mean I won't work on transformation in the meanwhile, but it means that I won't release any of that stuff until I have a good variety of Character Creation options finished (and hopefully a working character Creator! :D)

So, expect the next update to have the beginnings of that being fleshed out. (More Races, Classes, Backstories, Some Example Perks, Talents (Was previously Skills), and some example things of descriptions (starting with the formatting of THAT menu mess...)

2) What Color scheme is easiest to read and fits Alteratio?
Everyone here knows about a game called Nimin: Fetish Fantasy by Xadera, right? Remember how you could change the Text Color and the Background?

I plan to do that in the future, but it's not something that I should be working on while I have no mechanics. Light Gray seems like it will suffice for now, but if I get too many complaints I'll do something about it.

3) Are you REALLY sure you want to donate this early?
Yea, I figured it would end up like this. I thank the 1/4 of the majority who does want to donate, but we just won't do it yet.

IF we do go that route, the game will always remain free fully to everyone - no 'buy to play' shenanigans. Since I quite literally have no idea what I would even GIVE YOU for supporting me, you'll have to give me ideas.

I do know some people inquired about Art, so I know that would go under that - if we end up doing Art.

Too many polls, lol!

I think that's it for now - after these new polls end, I'll throw up the update for v1 Character Creator (Monday!).

  1. No votes in recent poll because.

    1. Typing or buttons are equally good/bad for me. You are not making a fap-quest, which is the only reason buttons are more important because one-handing typing can get difficult at times.

    2. I'll check every few days for updates, so few updates with lots of content or fast updates with little content make no difference. The only comment I would make about this is that if you are trying out something new, or something which you are still working out the details on, then frequent updates will get quicker feed-back (and allow you to change direction if necessary). However, if you are simply fleshing out a well-defined system, a long period of nothing with a big content update at the end isn't a problem. Just keep the community informed about what you are doing and there will be no heartache.

It is, in the end, your game, so whatever style you prefer, text/buttons or rapid/slow updates, is largely dependent on how you work and how much feedback you want at a time. Regular communication via blog entries will keep your community happy, regular game updates are less important. What the community wants to know is that you haven't lost interest in the game. Not that they see an update every 3 days. Long periods of silence will start to lose followers.

Not all of us though, I still monitor games which haven't updated in 3 years. Who knows?

    1. To be honest, I just want to play the game - however its played, I could care less :)

And thanks for the input! I'm sure others will look at this and make a decision based on it.

  2. Aside from some primary functions like managing inventory and saving, typing in commands gives you more depth because the player is not presented with every conceivable option, and gives more incentive to experiment rather than simply clicking every button and forgetting about that moment 5 minutes from then.

Wasteland 2 addresses this really well. When in dialog with characters you have the typical "next" and when it asks questions you can say "yes" "no" or give quest item etc. but it also has a text box above the dialog options that you can give text commands that were not listed in the dialog options like "ask about his brother". You can even type "no" and it will still register the same as pressing the button "No" as the buttons are just shortcuts that print it into the text box.

    1. I'm unsure if I could do that, but I can try!

That's definatly beyond my current understanding of the Quest programming, but if enough people request it, I'll look into doing it :D

The only thing I know for sure is that I have '2' options to get input from users:

"Get Input" requires you to type, I THINK, so that's not really a shortcut.

"Wait for button press" lets you push any key then runs anything I want, but its quite literally ANY KEY.

Maybe if I combine the two? Otherwise, I'll have to come up with something unique!
