Public release! Woooooo!
Thank you all for waiting patiently - everything is up and running as far as I know!
We'll see how long it takes for things to catch on fire ;)
On a side note - it's 5 A.M. and I don't quite feel up to writing my Weekly Update right now, so I'll do it when I wake up!
If you select 'Background' in the character creation section, you can't do anything, and have to restart the game.
ReplyDeleteI'll make sure that you don't have to restart the game, but I did say what DOES work :P
DeleteYeah, I was just clicking around and ended up stuck there. I thought it wanted me to type something in the box.
DeleteI toyed with the alpha, and will describe my experience with it. Presumably, you'll know which bits of my experience are actual bugs, which are issues you haven't tackled yet, which are Other Things Entirely…
ReplyDeleteTech details: I'm using a MacBook Pro (8 GB of RAM, 2.53-GHz Intel Core I5 CPU) with OS X 10.10.3, and Safari 8.0.5. I therefore cannot play Quest offline, and tried the online version.
When the game first appears in your browser window, it asks "Do you wish to start a new game?", and gives you a numbered list of two responses ("1: Yes" and "2: No"). The two list-items are both clickable items, and there's also a text-input box. When I click on one of the list-items, the game does the appropriate thing instantly. When I type the appropriate number into the text-input box, I have to hit the Return key twice before the game responds—the first Return-hit doesn't seem to do anything.
Next is "Starting a new game will erase all data.", with the same numbered, clickable, two-item list. Also the same text-input box. Clicking on the list-items yields the expected normal behavior. Typing into the text-input box requires two Return-hits before the game does anything I can notice.
Character Creation
==================
In the initial "wanna start a new game?" bits, all text is displayed in a blatantly bitmapped font that's clearly supposed to remind the player of old-school video games. Once Character Creation proper begins, the old-school-video-game font goes away, and the game displays all text in a 'normal' font.
The game's main text area says (in part) "Choose your Refresh, Backstory, Race, Class, Aspects, Talents, Perks, Description and Finished.", with 'Refresh' and 'Backstory' and etc all being clickable links. Normal clicking on any of these links does not appear to do anything. Control-clicking (the Mac equivalent of right-clicking, i think?) on any of those links brings up its 'tool-tip', but does not appear to do anything else.
Letting the cursor 'hover' over any of these links for as long as 10 seconds does not appear to bring up the 'tool-tip'; am unsure whether the hover-thing just doesn't work at all, or it might work if I waited longer, or what.
The "Places and Objects" box in the game-control sidebar seems to be the only way to access the working bits of character generation. Said box contains a list of all the options (i.e., Refresh, Backstory, etc) that are not functional links in the main text area. Each list-item in this box is actually clickable—but when I put my cursor over any of the list-items, there's no visible cue to tell the player that the list-item is clickable.
At one point, I somehow managed to get the game in a state where it didn't pay any attention to my clicks in the "Places and Objects" box. Could not reproduce this issue, but it made a big impression on me. Hopefully you have some idea how that glitch is even possible?
Anyway. Clicking on a list-item in the "Places and Objects" box makes the game display a button just under the whole list. For Refresh, the button's text-label reads "Refresh"; for Finished, the button reads "Are You Sure"; for everything else, it's "Choose [list-item]".
There's more, but your blog has a 4Kcharacter limit on posts, so I'll stop now. More later.
It's actually nice to have something this thoroughly written out - I was suspecting it to be far shorter, but if you say there is more, then lol!
DeleteI's also really nice to know the MAC side of things, since I am personally working on a windows: I'll answer everything that I can right now, starting from the top:
I'll experiment with the 'Double Return key' issue. Might be a coding issue on my end doing it. I'll see if I can reproduce it - I did originally gear everything to be button-based to start, so it might just be I gave it crappy 'input' capabilities.
Character Creation:
That is currently the intended way - I hope to, here soon, figure out what a decent 'normal' font is, but I personally like the classic font for the intro screen - I did some experimenting and the 8-bit font becomes hard to read, more so when it is small. I hope to, soon in the future, create an 'options' menu somewhere always accessible (perhaps typing it into the box) that allows you to change the font to something the player decides.
That's interesting that the normal click does nothing - for the windows version, a simple left-click pulls up the drop-down menu (small, white boxes near the mouse pointer with a phrase such as 'Choose') while a right-click warrants no response. I'll investigate this further, and perhaps provide a video walk-through and/or have a live stream of sorts with you or another mac user to figure out these 'bugs'.
Hovering over anything does not do anything (simply because I have not found out how to do it or if it is possible in QUEST).
If clicking one of the options under 'Places and Objects', it does NOT have a drop-down menu - instead, what should occur is a highlight of Yellow/Gold for the item selected. Looking to the bottom of the 'Places and Objects' list (above the 'Compass' name) will appear a section of buttons that can be clicked (for example, clicking Backstory warrants 'Choose Backstory' as an option. As a note - any option that appears there is always usable.
If none of the above occurs in your tests, this I will need to further investigate the compatibility issues (and perhaps even make a version JUST for MAC)
There are only 3 possibilities that I feel could have caused this:
1) The game is hosted on the QUEST's creator's website, so I cannot guarantee a 100% accurate connection all the time, and it might have been an issue with their servers (which I have experienced in the past)
2) I could have easily screwed up my coding - some of the feedback I've already received is pointing to some dead-links that occur during the 'Main Character Creation Screen', and that can cause a 'crash' where nothing is possible anymore (since it sends you into 'no-mans'-land)
3) Another possible compatibility issue with MAC (Glad you brought all of this up ^.^)
Those are the buttons that allow you to do the actions! Currently, because of my inability to do genius level coding, I only did the button-side of things, so in order to access any of the options via typing, you have to type 'Choose Backstory' or 'Choose Backstory Backstory', in some cases for example. Now that I have discovered how the function works, I'll be fixing it so people can type and ensure that I corrected the issue.
My apologies for making an impression on you! I'm kicking myself so hard now that I did that (and I'm sure that I did that to several people), but all I can say is that it will get better, and I hope I improve everything you've touched upon during update 0.0.3B
Thank you once again for your thorough taking of everything that you experienced ^.^
It's just a personal preference, but I'd prefer technical reports such as this be posted in the 'Bug Reporters! Anything to report?' section located in the left-hand margin of the blog under polls (if any) and the Current Version block. But, post wherever is easiest for you!
