[Alchemists, Templars, and Bards Oh My!] - Weekly Update #17

Hello! Welcome to weekly update #17 (you can read that as hash-tag 17 for you twitter peoplez).

This week's theme:

Other things I thought about & Character Classes!

So, before I dive headfirst into this, I do need to mention a few things -

I have a HORRIFIC memory! I try my best to write down my thoughts, especially about Alteratio, but even I (Oh yes, I'm afraid I'm human!) sometimes don't write things down - Why do I bring this up? Because this is one of the few things that I didn't write down.

Another thing: I don't 'rehearse' my blog posts on here - I write what I think and feel, and what I want to get across to you all. I do not look over everything I have written 15 times and then make a post - I just glance for grammatical errors and hit post. I don't like censoring information to you all, and I want to come across as a fellow human being who has a large aspiration to play Games of all sorts as well as a complete newb game-maker who dreams big and does sub-par work.

I hope that what I wrote above to you indicates that I don't just make this game for 'showz' or to float my own boat - I'm just a person trying to do something I want to do, failure or not! ("Failure is not an option!" - Old High School Slogan)

Now that that is out of the way, about my character creation....

I'm going to make you click a button first, so, after you click it, feel free to read all about it! I'm evil.

I TOTALLY didn't think you'd push it *Is full of exaggeration*. Enough with the jokes :P

So, the only things I have honestly managed to accomplish in the past few days (which made me have less time than I thought - even today, MY Monday) is finish coding the basis of everything, which in turn makes me only needing to input RP info, and the Rough Draft (as in, written on paper and not on my computer).

So, welcome your starter classes! [All of the Below can easily change to public opinion, but I like how it turned out!]

-----
There are 5 'types' of classes:

Natural
- The Alchemist
- The Druid
- The Hunter

Physical
- The Barbarian
- The Tactician
- The Warrior

Magic
- The Bard
- The Sorcerer
- The Wizard

Finesse
- The Assassin
- The Swashbuckler
- The Thief

Divine
- The Cleric
- The Paladin
- The Templar

Now, I know a few questions are going to arise, and I will do my best to answer then in advance!

1) But Mr. Game Designer Sir, <x> class would't fit in <x> category!

Ah, a very keen eye you have!

Yes, some of these starting classes can fit in multiple categories, but each category has a 'defining factor' that places each class in it. The definition for each is below:

Natural - Concerning the forces of nature, having to do with the earth, typically found/uses the natural surroundings, has traits similar to nature.

Ex. Hunter is very similar to a predator, 'hunting' their prey with increased experience as they learn more and more about them.

Physical - Using brute force, head-to-head combat, trained fighters, masters of war, skilled combatants

Ex. Tactician can be a general on the front-lines or a master soldier who can read the flow of battle and predict what will come next.

Magic - Manipulating the forces of power that do not stem from nature or the divine, innately attuned to the magical energy in everything, creating fantastical effects through mediums.

Ex. Bard knows lore and secrets that many others have yet to acquire, including how to use the element of Magic.

Finesse - Precision and deft manipulation, agile with the swiftness to avoid anything, skillful with the mind and combat, always has a plan.

Ex. Swashbuckler is a danger-defying combatant who typically uses a single weapon and wades through combat in a hit-and-run 'show!'

Divine - Gifted by the gods, bestowed power through means not of this world, non-natural strength

Ex. Templar is a disciple from a divine order sent as an executioner to decimate the order's enemies.

-----------------------------------

Okay, so I only came up with one question. I'm expecting more to arise after you read this though!

As for other announcements....

I honestly don't know if I'll be able to finish by the end of April. Yea yea, I know you're thinking 'They'll push it back to May, then June, then July...' and that's not my intention.

I can only work so fast, and I'm a perfectionist in the sense that if I DON'T do it 'right' the first time, it's wrong (and I typically scrap whatever it is). I really really cannot do that with this, so I am doing everything in my utmost power to make sure it's top quality when it's shipped out to be torn apart by the masses. It's counter-productive, but it's better than not having the want to continue Alteratio willingly.

So, that announcement about Patreon - I wanted to touch a bit more on it, since I know it;s been a touchy topic, especially considering it's this early in the game that I said we will more than likely consider doing it

Firstly, I'm really not into the idea of 'getting paid' for this. I just want to make a game that everyone enjoys. Personally, I'd enjoy it just as it is without anything extra added to it. BUT, I know others would be wanting more (heck, even I, the maker, want more) and with my unemployment, I really can't dump anything other than time and sweat into this. That's my legacy until I get a job.

To give you the OPPORTUNITY to do all of these fabulous things (which is just that - it is not a requirement) I am doing Patreon. I will also honestly say that I will probably take some of that money for living costs (phone, internet, etc.), and I'm afraid I can't say something like "I'll only take<x>% and the rest goes to Alteratio!".

What I CAN say is that easily more than half of it will go into this (At the moment, I would love to think 75% would go into Alteratio, but I seriously have no idea on the pricing for artwork, programs, etc. will be. If they are cheap, I'll put less money into it, and if they are expensive, then I'll put more money into it. Seriously, no idea how to handle this, so ignore my ramblings!). To top this off, I'm heavily considering a 'tracker' of sorts so you can see how much of a 'back' Alteratio has for money, so you (and I!) know what we have to work with, and what we can do with that money.

A trend I've noticed with games of a similar genre who get a lot (Trials in Tainted Space, for example) is that they have Milestones that are finished and it seems that nothing else ever gets done...?

That ain't gonna happen here. I'll be constantly (and initially) asking for you guys' feedback on what milestones should be added as well at the '$<x> per month' rewards. Pertaining to the Per Month rewards, the only thing I can think of is a $1 reward with the incentive to be added to the credits.

Tl:Dr

I'll always keep y'all informed on how much of the money you give to me will be going into Alteratio, the costs for all of its expenditures, and how much I take for myself.

I'm trying not to run a business, but I will handle it in a very business-like manner, because it is SERIOUS business what I do with YOUR money.

Again, I hate my memory - I knew I had more to talk about, but as soon as I set my mind on something (like the above) I just tune myself into just that.

I'll post again if I come up with anything!

Last note: I'll be posting up some polls here sometime this week! Keep an eye out for them!

    1. Thank you, but again - I am telling you and everyone else that you don't HAVE to. I'm trying not to force you or even give much incentive other than a 'better game'.

Just make sure you know that ^.^

  2. If you're unemployed, you have no income. If you have no income, you (eventually) become homeless. If you're homeless, you'll really have problems doing any work on Alteratio. Therefore, it's at least arguable that all Patreon money will go to supporting Alteratio, in the sense that it will make it financially possible for you to work on the game.

    1. I am currently looking for a job, and will always be looking for a job unless there is SOMEHOW a boom in popularity of Alteratio and a sweeping demand that this be my job (which I highly doubt).

Currently, because I have free time, I work on Alteratio as often as I can - Otherwise, I will at minimum always have food and a house over my head, so there really isn't a press or need for money unless I want convenient things (such as internet).

Arguably I could twist my words and do as you say - since all the money is going into my pocket for Alteratio, and I maintain Alteratio, then effectively I get all the money and cn do whatever I want with it.

But I won't do that, that's not what you're paying for. You're paying to make Alteratio better, not to pay my living expenses and lack of no job, unless people demand otherwise. That's mainly the other reason why I wanted to keep you all in the know on how much money ALTERATIO has, and how much I take for myself.

I wanna clean business, ya' hear?
